ACETYLATED GLYCOL STEARATE

WHAT IS ACETYLATED GLYCOL STEARATE?

It’s a fatty acid made from glycerin and stearic acid.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

It’s used in formulations as a thickener, a surfactant, an emollient and as an emulsifier. It can also make the skin appear soft and smooth.

WHAT IS IT DERIVED FROM?

Acetylated glycol stearate is derived from vegetable oils or animal fats.  Those with palm, corn or soy allergies should proceed with caution.

IS IT SENSITIVE SKIN FRIENDLY?

This depends on the formulation and your type of sensitivity. Vegetable glycerin can cause congestion for some. And oils such as shea butter and cocoa butter are high in stearic acid which can cause acne.

In addition, some may find that products with a single stearic acid ingredient can be tolerated. But if multiple stearic acid ingredients are present, it can cause issues such as irritation or acne. The same can be said for glycerin and its byproducts.

If you are sensitive to glycerin or stearic acid, you may want to skip products with this ingredient. If you’re on the fence, you can read about my experience using a product with acetylated glycol stearate here.

LOOKING FOR MORE INFORMATION?

Here is an interesting study on glycol stearate and a request to re-examine its safety in cosmetics.

Remember, the “safety” of skincare ingredients is not a one size fits all. What’s considered safe for some, may not be safe for others. Use this information as a tool, and not a final say. Your personal experience is the best indicator as to whether an ingredient/product is appropriate for you and your skincare needs.
