WHAT IS IT SODIUM HYALURONATE?
Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronate acid.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Its low molecular weight allows it to penetrate deep into the skin. It draws in water, promotes elasticity and helps maintain moisture. Read more here.
WHAT IS IT DERIVED FROM?
Sodium hyaluronate is made from hyaluronic acid. And hyaluronic acid comes from two main sources. Bacterial fermentation or animal byproducts. Most skincare products on the market that contain hyaluronic acid and its derivatives, get their HA from bacterial fermentation. As it’s easier to procure and less expensive for the manufacturer. SODIUM HYALURONATE VS. HYALURONATE ACID?
As previously mentioned, the main difference between SH and HA is that the sodium hyaluronate penetrates deep into the skin. Whereas hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid sits on top of skin.
For example, if you’re experiencing dehydration. Sodium hyaluronate would work best as it brings water to the deeper layers of your skin. Whereas, if you’re having issues with dry, flakey skin. Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is best as it attracts water to the top layer of the skin. When used properly, both can increase elasticity and have great moisturizing capabilities.
IS IT SENSITIVE SKIN FRIENDLY?
SH can cause inflammation since its small molecular size allows it to penetrate deep into the epidermal layers. It can cause irritation and further aggravate skin that is already irritated. If your skin is hypersensitive or reactive and want to use a hyaluronic acid serum due to its moisturizing benefits. A glycerin based serum may be a better option.
However, those with sensitive skin can use sodium hyaluronic successfully, if you know how and when to use it. Read more about how to apply hyaluronic acid serums here.
Remember, the “safety” of skincare ingredients is not a one size fits all. What’s considered safe for some, may not be safe for others. Use this information as a tool, and not a final say. Your personal experience is the best indicator as to whether an ingredient/product is appropriate for you and your skincare needs.
